winkings review

Developed by Lemondo Games and released on PS4 and Steam, Winkings is a 2D platformer that throws a lot of enemies at you expects you team up some buddies to take em all out. The goals is survive waves of mutated umbrellas and and progress through the campaign's 60 levels. There's 6 worlds, 10 weapons, 4 difficultly levels, and up to four players can join in co-op or versus action. You can pick up hearts or shields for more health or armor. If you die you turn into a ghost for a while before respawning. If everyone dies you start the stage over. You can jump and shoot with either the triggers or face buttons which is convenient. Most of the time the weapons are rapid fire, so you can just hold down the shoot button. Since there's no ammo or cooldowns, you're always holding down the fire button, which is fatiguing, but still better than having to keep firing the pistol. There's no friendly fire but you can still knock your teammate causing mass confusion. Don't forget you can shoot up and down. And you can jump down through some platforms taking you to the top of the screen.

The levels fill up with lots of creatures which makes the game very chaotic, and hard to see yourself sometimes. The difficulty curve is a little bumpy. Some stages it took a while to figure out what to do, like this level. Or the levels with no guns. And I recommend taking this boss out with your melee attack. But usually the strategy involves finding the safest place to stand keep firing and listen to the music. Overall, Winkings provides some entertainment but will put off players expecting a fuller experience . There's no leaderboards or online at the moment so the replay is kind of lost. Beating the game on normal with 1 player is very challenging, but it's best enjoyed with friends. And the the versus mode is good but they should've added bots. B-
