thumper review
Developed and released by Drool as one of PSVR's launch titles, Thumper is a self-described rhythm violence game of breakneck speed. The object of the game is to jump, turn, and hit all the notes while trying to make it to the end of the level, where you'll battle a boss face. If you screw up too much you'll be sent back to the beginning of the wave. There's anywhere between 15 and 30 waves per levels, with a total of 9 levels. Which means some these journeys can last up 30 minutes. The controls are simple. Press X to hit a note, and press and hold x in the direction you want to turn. There are some death spikes that can be avoided by holding x and up, and ring of deaths that are introduced on 5-1, which forces you not to miss a note. This round might be too tough for some folks.
Children under 12 and the elderly should also approach Thumper with caution, because this is one of the most intense VR experiences on the market. It is extremely fast, immersive, and at times frightening, not just because of the scary heads, but the incredible velocity that the visuals and sound smack your senses with. There are intermittent periods of tranquility where you're given time to reflect on your accomplishments. Even though the levels looks very similar, and the difficulty curb is a little shakey at times, it's wholey satisfying to complete. And you get a trophy every level. And when you're done you can play new game plus which doesn't let you continue. You can also go for S-ranks on each of the levels, but be warned it's not based on raw score, you can't take damage or miss a note, and you need to get an S on each wave, so if you miss something, just restart from checkpoint. You can also play the non-VR version, which is oddly enough more dizzying due to the shakey camera. Overall, Thumper is a one of kind rhythm game that violently assaults the players senses. And this be a good thing depending on how you get your jollies.B+
