rigs mechanized combat league review

Developed by Guerilla Cambridge and released by Sony Interactive entertainment as one of PSVR's launch titles, RIGS puts you in a giant mech suit and combats you and two teammates against and a group of three in several different game variations. Most of the game modes center around combat, taking out the opponents with either of your sides arms or melee attacks. The whole process is taken through a career, where you compete for points across different seasons and leagues, and earn credits and fans to buy new mechsuits and unlock more goodies. Each mechsuit has different loudouts, stats, and abilities, but the basic controls are the same. You shoot with the triggers, strafe with the bumpers, and switch between speed, power and recovery with the square circle and triangle buttons respectively. The head movement aims your shots and feels satisfying when you're dialed into combat. I tried the alternate control method of using your head to turn instead of the analog stick. It made me very dizzy.

The biggest problem with RIGS is the tutorial, and the downtime between each of the matches. I mean they make a such big deal about preparing you for battle, and before you know the battle is over and you need to listen to everyone's BS again. Although the voice acting is good, it's downright abusive at times. Especially in the long drawn out mandatory tutorial where they just won't shut up. And I never want to feel something like this in VR ever again. There was also something weird with the AI. The first few rounds when I didn't know what the hell I was doing, my team won, then when I finally got my shit together and knew my way around the maps and the controls, I couldn't win anymore. Did anyone else have this rubberband experience? There's also some timed challenges you can compete in for medals and credits, but all they do is emphasize the weaknesses in the controls, which feel okay when you're stomping through the battle field, but if you need dexterity, forget about it. Overall, RIGS Mechanized Combat league is perfect example of a decent game being ruined by AAA production values. Did anyone else feel trapped at times? I always hated mandatory tutorials, but this took it to a whole different level.B-
