retro review - bomb jack

Bomb Jack was developed and published by Tekhan in 1984 and release on Hamster's Arcade Archive Series for the PS4. The object of the game is to collect all of the bombs and move on to the next round. If you collect the bombs in a certain order, shown by the fuze, you can earn a higher point bonus. There's also bonus coins that acts as multipliers and a power ball that changes all enemies into gold that you can collect. There's a variety of enemies and they appear fast, so you better keep moving.

Speaking of moving, the controls will probably throw some people off at first. You only have a joystick and a button. Firstly, that button performs a jump, and if you press up while jumping you will go higher. If you press the jump button again it will stop you in mid air. If you repeatedly press the button in mid air, you will descend slowly to the ground. If it sounds unusual, it's because it is. Try to think of it as being launched from the ground and hovering your way down, and this should make your experience smoother.

My eyes had trouble distinguishing the bombs from the background in some levels, but like the controls I was able to overcome it. There are about 20 different levels that start repeating as you go higher up, and its quite rewarding to find a way of getting all 23 fused bombs per level. The arcade archives series allows you to save states, so be sure to use that to your advantage. Overall, Bomb Jack is a good game if you can embrace the unusual jumping mechanics. B
