Little Nemo the Dream Master
Dream Master is about a sleepy boy who feeds animals candy and gives them diabetes. Once they pass out, you take over their bodies and commit suicide by jumping into an abyss. Or you can try collecting all the keys and reaching the exit.
Little Nemo has a rich and colorful history. He was first conceived in 1905 as a comic strip character and has survived the ages through silent films, operas, animation, and video games. The full-page illustrations were pretty trippy so you should check them out. There are only a handful of people still alive that were born before Little Nemo entered the public consciousness and I'm grateful that Capcom developed and published an NES game so that he can be memorialized in 8-bit form.
The game was suppose to coincide with the release of an animated film but the movie was delayed and pushed back because faceless organizations get to decide what is suitable for your children to watch and not you. Happy? This probably sank any chances of Little Nemo returning to the limelight. Most of what was cut was reinstated later and isn't really shocking or noteworthy. All this did was squander time for the creators and lead to its commercial failure.
The movie itself isn't as bizarre or surreal as you might expect after glancing over the comics. Sort of indistinguishable from other cartoons of the time. I hope someone picks up the Little Nemo IP and uses it to make a really fantastic game that captures the art style of Winsor McCay. Oh wait-- it's already in the public domain! Developers go hard.
