GRIP Combat Racing
GRID by Codemasters manages to string together pieces of previous working titles while introducing a shittier engine, lousy physics, and the most boring campaign mode I have ever played. If only I bought GRIP instead I would have saved $60 and had a much fuller, faster, and more unique experience.
GRIP Combat Racing continues to raise the bar of the futuristic racing genre, alongside Fast RMX and Redout. There are dozens of vehicles, some with wheels that grip to the surface and others without that hover slightly above the track. You compete along thrilling and winding courses in the same vein as Wipeout. Some events have you using weapons, but they don't feel nearly as cheap as they do in Wipeout Omega, which makes the combat aspects more engaging and less lucky. You have two weapons slots, so I advise holding on to a shield if you're out in front.
The courses are exceptionally well designed. There are many branching paths that you can take depending on your cornering ability and precision. The vehicles are going so fast that you sometimes feel like a passenger with no time to negotiate which way you want to go, you just have to go for it. You'll ride on walls, tubes, and flip upside-down which is extremely smooth especially while riding with the nose-cam. And if you don't play with the nose-cam you can't really call yourself a racer. GRIP Combat Racing is made for the hardcore, but has enough accessibility that a supercasual would benefit from giving this a quick spin.
