Resident Evil 4
I don't play many contemporary survival horror games because they're little more than walking simulators with jump scares. Which is just about as frightening as teaching middle school. RE4 has enough emphasis on combat and resource management that keeps me immersed each time I play it. Which has been about 6 or 7 full playthroughs.
My favorite version is the Wii edition because of the awesome controls. I wish the Nintendo switch would continue to support pointer games as it really does make shooters better when implemented correctly (see also Goldeneye 007 multiplayer for Wii.) But RE4 isn't exactly a full-out, balls-to-the-wall shooter. You want to have your gun ready all times, but it's more about stunning the enemy so that you can dropkick or stab them to death, then loot their corpse for Pesetas that can be traded with the creepy, lovable merchant for better upgrades and a larger item box. Unless of course you're playing The Mercenaries, a combat-wave side-game with 4 arenas and unlockable characters.
The PS4 version is fine but they really skimped on the achievements. WTF. 12 trophies and no platinum? Goto hell. There are so many different ways you can play through RE4: speedrun, knife only, all guns, full upgrades, 100% accuracy, 0% accuracy, stealth-- which is why I continue to play it every Halloween when I get a hot minute, and Ada's adventure is a nice addition for those who want to experience pieces of game without a huge time investment. It would be cool if they made another Resident Evil like this. I wonder if they ever thought about that.
