World Games NES megamix

A lot of sports compilations surfaced during the retrogaming era as a catalyst for creators to show off their versitality. Or sometimes just to shovel some incomplete bullshit together under one title. World Games lies somewhere in between, topped off with a jocular self-awareness that I always enjoy revisiting.

Weightlifting is the first event and if you take a hot minute to read the manual or watch the NESmegamix you can learn the timings pretty easily. Anyone who doesn't mind a little trial and error could figure it out in a timely matter. Still struggling? Listen to his breathing. There are subtleties to most of the games on here and if you can master weightlifting you should be good for most of the other seven events.

If you really suck, just try screwing up and watch your athlete break his legs, drown, or suffer a concussion. It's all good wholesome fun. If this were ported to consoles and had acheivements I would make a trophy for failing at each event. I'm not sure which injury I like best, but they're fun to discover and satisfying to watch.

I made a Let's Play of this a while back and won every event. I'm pretty sure it was a personal best so I'm glad I captured it. Man did I get lucky at bullriding! It's the only event I still don't fully grasp. At least I was able to indentify all of the ingame music by ear because Shazam didn't recognize any of them. Not even the national anthems.
